Low Back Pain
Low back pain is a term often used to describe a range of conditions associated with pain or discomfort in the lower back, which usually arise in relation to problems of the bone, joint, connective tissues, muscles and nerves of the lumbar spine. These problems can arise due to a variety of reasons and can even cause symptoms in other areas of the body.
Integral Health Care work with you in Brisbane to alleviate your causes and symptoms, so you can live a happier and healthier life.
Lower back pain issues include
- Pain, tingling, numbness, burning sensation and/or weakness in the back or legs.
- Narrowing of the spinal canal of the spine.
- Wear and tear of the spinal joints leading to Degenerative Disc Disorder.
- Pressure/irritation of the spinal nerves.
- Irritation caused by disc degeneration or herniation.
Causes of back pain
- Poor posture while sitting, sleeping or standing.
- Trauma due to an accident.
- Contact sports.
- Poor lifting technique.
- Repetitive micro trauma.
The majority of pain in this area is due to nerve irritation or compression of the nerve. Irritation of these nerves may be caused by joint degeneration, disc herniation, localized inflammation or soft tissue injury. Research done by the Chiropractic Hospital-based Research Outcomes (CHIRO) study published in the journal Spine shows that treating acute pain with chiropractic treatment is more effective than conventional medical treatment.
What are my treatment options for back pain?
Treatment is delivered to the problem area to improve mobility and reduce irritation of the involved structures. Treatment may involve chiropractic adjustments, muscular releases and/or physical therapy.

Sciatica is a relatively common condition with a lifetime incidence varying from 13% to 40%. The corresponding annual incidence of an episode of sciatica ranges from 1% to 6%.
Sciatica occurs when there is irritation to the Sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, which runs from the lower back through your hip area and buttocks and down both legs. Due to the course of the nerve itself, sciatica can be a very debilitating condition as it can cause pain, weakness, burning sensations and numbness of the lower limbs. As a result, you may find walking, sitting or standing for periods of time challenging and often painful.
Diagnosis of Sciatica
A thorough history a physical examination will take place. This will include neurological, orthopaedic and physical examinations. If diagnostic imaging is required, you will be referred for the appropriate examination to give a more detailed understanding of your condition. To give you the best results possible an individual treatment plan will be created based on the results of the examinations.
Treatment of Sciatica
The majority of the symptoms of Sciatica are due to nerve irritation in the lower back, compression of the nerve by the Piriformis muscle (which the nerve sometimes passes through), by dysfunction of the sacroiliac joint of the pelvis and possible disc herniation causing a “pinched nerve”. The back pain treatment is delivered to the problem area(s) to improve mobility and reduce irritation of the Sciatic nerve. Treatment may involve Chiropractic adjustments, muscular releases and/or physical therapy.
Current research states “Sixty percent of patients with sciatica who had failed other medical management benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention. Patients with symptomatic Lumbar Disc Herniation failing medical management should consider spinal manipulation followed by surgery if warranted”.
At Integral Healthcare our Chiropractors are uniquely skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of Sciatic nerve pain.
Pain in the Upper Back
Pain in the upper back usually is concentrated between the shoulder blades and is affecting more people than ever before. This is not surprising considering the amount of time spent doing office work hunched over your desk with rounded shoulders, forward head posture and poor workstation ergonomics. Another huge contribution to the prevalence of upper back pain is the increased use of mobile devices, which accentuate poor posture while looking at the screens. For this reason, the younger population are also complaining of upper back pain more frequently, often referring to discomfort up into the neck, shoulders, arms an even around to the front of the chest.
When you experience problems in the chest
Once serious causes of upper back pain have been ruled out by a thorough history and examination our Chiropractor will locate the cause of the discomfort. Treatment will then take place. Fortunately, chest pain from musculoskeletal origin is relatively easy to correct. The aim of the treatment will be to normalize the affected joints or muscles and re-educate the neurological control of the affected area. This treatment is undertaken to improve the control of locomotion, neurological function and to reduce pain, improving overall quality of life and wellbeing. Our Chiropractor at Integral Healthcare takes a holistic approach to your assessment to ascertain whether other areas may be contributing to the dysfunction in the upper back. A variety of techniques may be utilized to treat the affected area such as:
- Specific gentle adjustments
- Muscular releases
- Lifestyle advice
- Exercise advice and guidance
