It is fairly common to injure the ankle joints with most injuries being acute in nature. Commonly injury is caused by twisting, rolling the ankle or placing too much load through the joints. As a result, walking maybe difficult and often painful, this has a large impact on a person’s life. Without proper treatment previous injury to the ankle may make it more susceptible to injury in the future.
The ankle joint is classed as a hinge joint but unlike the knee the various other structures that help form the ankle allow for greater ranges of motion. The ankle is formed by four bones the Tibia, Fibula, Calcaneus (heel bone) and the instep bone (Talus). It is the interaction of these joints that allow for us to bend, twist and rotate the ankle joint. Ankle joints are quite prone to injury because they are a flexible joint that carries a large load, your entire body weight.
